What's it like to work in an airport? ?
I'm writing a novel based in Los Angeles Int'l airport. Can you please describe what it's like to be an airport employee? What's your job? What are the duties? What uniform do you wear? What are the work hours like? What other departments in the airport do you interact with? Thanks!
Hi mobile. Thanks for bringing that up...lol. I should have been more specific. My main character is a TSA. But I wanted descriptions of other jobs just so I can describe the ppl she interacts with. But TSA in particular. Do you work at LAX?
It can be very interesting at times. I work on the ramp for Virgin Blue in Australia. we have 30 minute turnaround times for all our planes so in 30 minutes the plane is unloaded of bags and pax, reloaded, paperwork done, boarded, no-shows found, late people pushed thru security and paperwork all finalized, which can be cutting it very close sometimes. as someone else has mentioned, air travel is a stressful thing to do and its still a mystery to how a lot of it works to the general public. some of them have no idea how the whole thing works, or may have traveled years ago or on a different airline with different rules, and they are a pain to deal with. the saying in the airport amongst staff is that once the passenger enters the terminal, they leave half there brain behind.
as for hours and stuff we work all hours of they day, early morning starts, very late finishes, etc. I work outside rain hail or shine, its gets to -10 Celsius in the winter and 40+ Celsius in the summer. uniform is just work pants and shirt and ear muffs and knee pads, and horrible wet weather gear if needed. obviously the people inside get dressed up a bit nicer. we all have to interact with all the other parts of the airport, so obviously our own check in/Guest service staff, ramp and terminal staff from other airlines, security staff, airline operations and airport operations/safety officers.
