why do we have different names for things?
such as british and american names for things, i have listed some, can you think of any more?
and why??
wardrobe - closet
watermelon - cantaloupe
boot - trunk
football - soccer
rugby - football
trainers - sneakers
pants - panties (underwear)
trousers - pants
top - shirt
shirt - dress shirt
dress - gown
i just find it funny how we speak the same language yet we have different names

It is hilarious
For instance, I am an English South African, but some words have been adopted into teh national psyche
For instance, everyone - Zulu,English,Afrikaans etc all call a Pick-up truck a Bakkie said bucky. That is the word used.
Takkies are used to describe running shoes. Not sneakers,the gym, running one
The other day, a whole bunch of us had to try and work out what a bakkie was- and we are English, as bakkie is the term used nationally
Ummm, oh, we say BRAAI and not barbeque
We actually have a national Braai Day
Also, what is funny is how the Brits use an 'u' in words and Americans do not
